An old carpenter wanted to go into retirement. He told his employer that he wanted to go back to his hometown and lived with his wife and children.
His employer asked if he could help him to build a house for the last time. The old carpenter agreed. But everyone noticed that his heart was not with him when he built the house. He used inferior materials and the workmanship was shoddy. When the house was completed, his employer gave him the key to the house. He said,"This house is my gift to you for your retirement."
The old carpenter was shocked and full of shame. If he knew that this house was for him, he would not have built it in such manner. Now he had to live in such a house.
This is exactly the same with our attitude towards life. We do not "build" our lives whole heartedly. We do not do our best at all times. When we discover the situation we are in, we are already trapped in the "house" we built for ourselves.
Think of yourself as though you are the carpenter. Use your wisdom whenever you erect a wall or hammer a nail. Your life is your own creation. Only you can create a beautiful life for yourself.

We put our least to the work we don't like or do not have interest in. Later, we get shocked at the situation we created for ourselves and try to figure out why we didn't do it differently.
